More About Stafford

Stafford is a residential suburb located eight kilometers north of central Brisbane. The area was originally known as Happy Valley, and was noted for its agistment, dairying, noxious trades, and extractive industries. Chinese market gardens were established in the area in 1857, and the Blackall bridge was built in 1870 to improve access to Brisbane. The proximity to Kedron Brook led to the development of tanneries, a wool scour, dairies, and a fellmongery in the area. A quarry and brickworks were also established by the 1880s. In 1886, the district’s name was changed from Happy Valley to Stafford, and the post office and school in Collier Street were named accordingly. Stafford remained a rural and industrial area until the post-World War II era, when it was developed into a residential suburb. The area is still home to several parks and reserves, and has good access to transportation and amenities.
