More About Red Hill

Red Hill, a residential suburb located 3.5 km northwest of central Brisbane, encompasses the area known as Ithaca, which was considered a separate suburb until 1975. The name “Red Hill” reflects the steep terrain with slopes of up to 45 degrees and the reddish subsoil apparent when excavations were made to create pathways. A prominent landmark within Red Hill is the St. Brigid’s Catholic church.

During the 1860s, Red Hill began as semi-rural estates and gradually saw increased settlement. Notable developments included the Windsor Brass Foundry in 1874, the opening of St Brigid’s church and a Catholic school, as well as the establishment of Presbyterian and Church of England churches. Tram services became available in 1897-98, making it convenient for residents. Schools, such as the Catholic school and government schools in neighboring areas, served Red Hill families. The main shopping area was Musgrave Road by 1918, featuring a variety of shops and businesses. Red Hill’s heritage includes St Brigid’s church, the Normanby Hotel, and historical buildings listed on the Australian and Queensland heritage registers. The suburb experienced a revival in the 1970s, appreciated for its proximity to the city, elevated views, and colonial architecture, with many heritage buildings restored.
