Like it’s better-known neighbours to the west and north, West End and South Brisbane, modern-day Highgate Hill is fast becoming one of Brisbane’s most popular ‘lifestyle’ suburbs. Highgate Hill occupies the first hill south of the Brisbane CBD (and south of the Brisbane River), just 2kms from the action of the Brisbane City. Highgate Hill is a relatively high-density residential suburb with a small business strip, situated on bustling Gladstone Road.
Many residences in Highgate Hill command sweeping views across the Brisbane River to the city in the north, Mt Coot-tha to the west, and south across the University of Queensland, down to the border ranges. Along with its proximity to the Brisbane CBD, Highgate Hill is close to shops, restaurants, bars, friendly parks, schools, transport hubs and major sporting facilities, including The ‘Gabba.
Historic, majestic riverside estates – some of the most magnificent in Brisbane – are hidden amongst the dense forests that cling to the southern side of Highgate Hill, and many are only visible from the river. The double and triple gables that are hallmarks of the ‘Queenslander’ style of home feature prominently on the northern slope facing the CBD, alongside notable brick apartment blocks built during the 1970s and 1980s. Brisbane’s first residential apartment block, Torbeck, completed in the 1960s, remains one of Highgate Hill’s most recognisable landmarks.
Although the trams have long disappeared and the train line now skirts the north-western boundary, Highgate Hill is well-connected by buses to the Brisbane CBD and surrounding suburbs. It is also conveniently located close to the University of Queensland, with frequent ferry services from neighbouring West End, and a mixed pedestrian, cyclist and bus-only bridge connecting Dutton Park directly to the University.
