Located approximately 18km to the north of Brisbane CBD, Bracken Ridge is predominantly a residential suburb situated between Bald Hills and Deagon and, as the name suggests, features a generally hilly terrain throughout the suburb. The ancestorial home of the Turrbul people, Bracken Ridge was originally considered an outlying district of now neighbouring Bald Hills and was chosen in the 1870’s as the site for the Bald Hills Cemetery.
Contemporary Bracken Ridge began life in the 1960’s and 1970’s as the effects of suburbanisation in Brisbane fiercely spurred demand for residential property in Brisbane’s outer suburbs with the Housing Commission building the suburbs first homes in 1966. As interest in the suburb continued to grow so too did development with the development of a shopping center on Gawain Street and the opening of Norris Road Primary School in 1977, St Joseph’s Catholic School in 1978 and St John Fisher Catholic College in 1981.
Interest in the suburb continued to grow as Bracken Ridge, like many suburbs in the area, benefitted from the transportation development boom of the 1980’s and the introduction of the Gateway Motorway, which snaked along the suburbs eastern boundary. Consisting primarily of low-density housing set on spacious blocks and curvilinear family-friendly estates, Bracken Ridge has maintained its position as an affordable and extremely popular option with a wide variety of residents.
