Located approximately 9km south-west of Brisbane’s CBD and surrounded by the Brisbane River on a land pocket peninsula, Fig Tree Pocket is a low density and rural zoned residential area named for a giant fig tree pocket for which a reserve was created in 1866. Connected to the CBD by the Centenary Highway and without through traffic, the suburb has been devoted mostly to very low density, low density and rural housing with large pockets of retained green space and limited noise pollution.
Home to the world’s oldest, and largest, Koala Sanctuary, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, which was established in the 1920’s, Fig Tree Pocket has developed, and retained, its isolated and village like atmosphere. With large portions of the suburb subdivided in the 1960’s and 1970’s interest in the area peaked with residents drawn to the suburb’s location, exclusiveness and preference for the larger allotments created in the suburb.
