More About Boondall

Located halfway between Brisbane CBD and Redcliffe, Boondall is a residential suburb on Brisbane’s north-eastern outskirts bordered by Sandgate Road, the Gateway Motorway, Shorncliffe in the north and the Boondall Wetlands, an expansive 707ha wetland reserve established in the 1990s and home to a wide range of animals including more than 190 species of birds.

Home to a mixture of young and established families, retirees and professional couples Boondall, which is commonly believed to have been named for the Aboriginal word meaning crooked creek, originally formed the northern part of the suburb of Nudgee and was referred to as College Hill up until the early 1920’s. Attractive to settlement in the mid 1800’s due to the suburbs proximity to Cabbage Tree Creek, Boondall experienced rapid development following the opening of the Sandgate Railway in the 1880’s and the opening of the Christian Brothers Nudgee College in 1891, the main building of which has been recognised on the Queensland Heritage Register as an outstanding landmark of Italianate architecture.

Continued demand for the suburb saw the development of the College Hill housing estate in 1915 which saw 600 allotments offered for sale and the establishment of the Boondall Primary School in 1925. Further expansion of the suburb was fuelled by suburbanisation and residential demand following the commercial development of the Sandgate Road precinct in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Boondall experienced further fortune in the 1980s, benefitting from Brisbane’s transportation growth with the opening of the Gateway Motorway and the redevelopment of existing public infrastructure and transportation services fuelling further residential growth in the area.
