More About Bardon
Located approximately 6km from Brisbane’s CBD, Bardon is primarily a residential area nestled within the foot hills of Mt Coot-tha and features a wide variety of architectural styles, including a large collection of traditional and highly prized ‘Queenslander’ style, timber and tin vernacular homes. Running alongside Ithaca Creek and originally known as Upper Paddington, Bardon was first surveyed in 1862 with land sales beginning in the following year however did not obtain the official title of Bardon until 1926.
Considered too steep for horse drawn carriages, development and subdivision was considerably slow until the development and expansion of the electric tramline began to push into the suburb, culminating in the final terminus at Bowman Park in 1937.
As development in the area grew and Bardon expanded, it incorporated the suburbs formally known as Jubilee and Rainworth and is home to several prestigious schools established in the early 1900’s such as Stuartholme Girls School, founded in 1914, and Rainworth Primary School which opened in 1928. Bardon, famed for its densely tree-lined streets, is also home to numerous parks, reserves, small boutique shopping outlets and a variety of significant sights which are listed on the Brisbane Heritage Registry.
