Located approximately 6km north of Brisbane CBD, Clayfield is primarily a residential suburb bisected Sandgate Road, a major thoroughfare that links north Brisbane with the CBD. Established in the 1800’s, Clayfield is a suburb with a rich history and is thought to have garnered its name from the deposits of clay found in the area and utilised for brick making in the adjacent suburb of Hendra.
With development underway in the late 1800’s and a newly established trainline linking Ascot to the CBD, Clayfield became the site of several large, prominent residences which saw the suburb vying for attention as Brisbane’s most desirable northern suburb and many of these historical buildings and homes are retained today.
The turn of the 20th Century saw the introduction of the Sandgate Road electric tram which connected Clayfield with Breakfast Creek which, combined with the train service, fiercely increased interest in the area with a subsequent building boom leading the way for a number of federation style homes. Clayfield has seen considerable urban development in numerous areas with previously stately homes and estates subdivided in the 1960s and 1970s and replaced with low rise unit and apartment blocks to meet growing demand for accommodation in the area.
Regarded as a hidden gem, Clayfield has remained a desirable yet affordable suburb extremely popular with a variety of demographics and offering a large variety of housing options for those seeking affordable, yet convenient inner city living.
