New Tenancy Laws: Ending Tenancies

Overview

The Queensland Government has implemented changes to the Residential Tenancies & Rooming Act 2008 (Qld) to take effect from 1 October 2022.

The REIQ has provided detailed information relating to these new laws and the Tenancy Laws Toolkit is an informative resource outlining the new laws.

Ending Tenancies

One of the changes to the tenancy laws is in relation to “Ending Tenancies”.

  • There are now a number of new grounds and also changes to the existing grounds relating to ending fixed term and periodic leases
  • The right of a landlord to end a periodic lease without grounds has been removed and from 1 October 2022, a periodic lease can only be ended for specific grounds, for example:
  1. Selling the property
  2. Demolition or redevelopment of the property
  3. Repairing or renovating the property which cannot be performed safely whilst tenants occupy the property
  4. Owner to move into the property

Refer to the Tenancy Laws Toolkit for full details on the changes to ending tenancies.
