How to clean your dishwasher

Chances are if you have a dishwasher at your rental property then it is likely to get used on a regular basis.  To help the dishwasher last longer and function effectively, below are some helpful tips and advice.

Read the manual if there is one at the property or google the dishwasher brand and model as there are often manuals available online.

Daily

  • Scrape large food particles into the bin so that you won’t have to remove them from the dishwasher filter at a later stage.
  • Leave the dishwasher door slightly ajar when the machine is not in use.  This will help air circulate in the machine and reduce the chances of mould and odours.
  • Where possible, use a good quality dishwasher detergent – this reduces a build up of residue in the machine and will also result in cleaner sparkling dishes.

Once a Month

  • Wipe the outside of the dishwasher with a soft cloth.
  • Refill the rinse aid dispenser – this section is located next to the detergent dispenser.  Rinse aid helps keep glasses streak-free and also helps with the drying function.

Regular Basis

  • Try and run the dishwasher regularly to ensure fatty substances don’t dry up in the machine.
  • Run the dishwasher on its hottest and longest cycle while empty to help remove any fatty deposits or limescale from the pipes.  This will also help prevent odours.  The local supermarkets often have a dishwasher cleaning product which can be used to clean the inside of the machine, for optimal results do this on a regular basis.

Please remember if you have a manual for the dishwasher, please read as there may be other helpful tips that may apply just to your brand and model machine.
